Azelaic is the quiet acid.
It does the work.
Azelaic acid is the Chemist Warehouse staple people skip because it is not retinol and not vitamin C. It is the pigment, bump and redness brief in one tube, if you give it weeks.
Azelaic acid (Azclear 20%, Finacea) helps the look of acne marks, rosacea-ish redness and pigment. Use it in the morning under SPF, add a retinoid at night later, and see a clinic if cysts or melasma need a person.
Retinol gets the documentary. Azelaic gets the loyalists. It is a dicarboxylic acid that talks to pigment and bacteria without the same theatre as a peel. Australian bathrooms already have Azclear and Finacea. The confusion is layering, not existence. This page is the missing long form. This is not a treatment plan. Rosacea and melasma still like a diagnosis.
What azelaic acid is for
Azelaic acid can fade the look of post-acne marks, even blotchy tone, and calm the look of redness for some people. It is often better tolerated than a retinoid, which is why it is a morning partner rather than a rival. Strengths you will see: 10% in some OTCs, 15% Finacea gel (pharmacist or prescription path depending on the product), 20% Azclear lotion that AU forums treat as a household god.
- Pigment and acne marks: the main reason to start.
- Bumpiness and clogged texture: a supporting reason.
- Redness: possible, not a guarantee, and not a substitute for a rosacea plan.
- It will not replace SPF. Nothing on this hub will.
Tube versus clinic
When Azclear is the move
| Job | Home azelaic | Book a chair |
|---|---|---|
| Marks from old breakouts | Yes. Morning, months, photos in the same light. | Extractions if congestion is still active. |
| Melasma | Azelaic can be part of a stack. | Diagnosis and often clinic pigment work. Do not IPL this blindly. |
| Cystic acne | A supporting cream. | A clinician. Azelaic is not isotretinoin. |
| You also want a retinoid | AM azelaic, PM retinoid, after each is tolerated alone. | Tell the facialist both, before a peel. |
How to use it without turning your face into chalk
Cleanse. Optional hydrating serum. Azelaic. Moisturiser if you need it. SPF. Some gels pill under makeup. Wait. A thin layer is a thin layer. Azclear 20% can feel sandy. That is the lotion, not a reason to scrub. If you burn, buffer with moisturiser or drop to every second morning.

Do not debut azelaic, retinal and a peel in the same lunar month. Start azelaic. When the skin is boring, add the retinoid at night. See the retinoid guide for the ladder. Pregnancy: azelaic is often discussed as a more acceptable option than retinoids, but that sentence is still a clinician's, not ours.
What people get wrong about azelaic
They use it once as a spot treatment and call it a fail. They layer Azclear on Finacea on The Ordinary and then add retinal. They put it on wet skin and then wonder why it pills under SPF. They expect melasma to vanish without a diagnosis. Azelaic is loyal. It is not theatrical. Marks keep a calendar.
If congestion is still active, the tube will fade marks slower than a pair of trained hands. That is why this directory still lists extraction rooms. If redness is vascular or rosacea, a cream is support. A clinician still owns the name of the condition. Do not IPL a guess.
Morning azelaic, night retinoid, SPF as law, is the grown-up stack. Start one, then the other. Photograph in the same bathroom light. If you cannot see a change at week six, you may need a stronger vehicle, or you may need the chair. Either way, you have data instead of a mood.
AU tubes worth knowing
Azclear Action 20% is the Chemist Warehouse reflex. Finacea 15% is the gel clinicians have named for years. The Ordinary azelaic 10% is the gentle on-ramp if 20% feels like sandpaper. Do not mix three azelaics. Pick one. Give it until the next season.

Book if
- Congestion still needs hands. Shine-style extraction clinics exist for a reason.
- Pigment is patchy, hormonal, or sitting on the upper lip. That is a consult.
- You want a peel calendar that already knows you use azelaic.
Skip if
- You expected a weekend fade. Marks keep a calendar.
- You planned to use it as a spot treatment once and call it a routine.
- The skin is broken, weeping, or infected. That is not an acid day.
Ask this
- Should I pause azelaic before this extraction, peel or LED?
- Is this redness rosacea, and is azelaic even the first move?
- What strength do you prefer people start with if they shop pharmacy?

Questions worth answering in full.
- Can I use azelaic acid with retinol?
- Yes, usually in different slots. Azelaic in the morning, retinoid at night, SPF always. Start one, then the other. See the retinoid guide.
- Is Azclear the same as Finacea?
- No. Azclear 20% lotion and Finacea 15% gel are different vehicles and strengths. Both are azelaic. They do not need to be layered.
- How long until azelaic acid fades marks?
- Think six to twelve weeks of daily use, not a fortnight. Photograph in the same bathroom light or you will gaslight yourself.
- Can azelaic acid bleach clothes?
- Some formulas can lighten fabrics. Let it dry. Dark pillowcases will tell on you.
- Is azelaic acid safe in pregnancy?
- Clinicians often prefer it to retinoids, but this page does not prescribe. Ask the person who owns your pregnancy care.
- Should I use azelaic acid before IPL?
- Tell the clinic every acid you use. They may pause it. Pigment plus light is not a DIY stack.
- Can I use azelaic acid with vitamin C?
- Often yes in the morning if the skin is calm. If you sting, alternate days. Do not debut both with a new retinoid in the same week.
This is not a treatment plan or medical advice. Rosacea, melasma, pregnancy and cystic acne belong to a qualified clinician. Pharmacy protocols vary.
