Retinol is a ladder.
Not a personality.

Retinyl palmitate is not retinol. Retinol is not retinal. Retinal is not tretinoin. Most of the irritation on TikTok is people skipping rungs, then blaming the molecule.

In Australia, start with a true retinol or retinal at night, two or three times a week, with daily SPF 50+. Move to pharmacist adapalene or GP tretinoin only if you still want more, and never while pregnant.

The internet sells vitamin A as a glow identity. It is a conversion chain. The closer the molecule sits to retinoic acid, the less homework your skin has to do, and the more likely you are to peel like a cheap manicure. This page is the AU map: what you can buy at Chemist Warehouse, what sits at Mecca, and what needs a prescription. This is not a treatment plan.

What these molecules actually are

Retinoids are vitamin A relatives that speed cell turnover and, over months, change how fine lines and congestion look. Retinyl palmitate is a shy ester. Retinol has to convert twice. Retinal (retinaldehyde) converts once and is the current smart OTC rung. Tretinoin is already retinoic acid. Adapalene (Differin) is a retinoid built for acne that people also use for texture. If the jar says retinol and the INCI says palmitate, you bought a mood.

Vitamin A ladder from palmitate to retinol, retinal, adapalene and tretinoin. Self-Care Melbourne.
Palmitate is not retinol. Retinol converts twice. Retinal once. Tretinoin is already acid and needs a GP.
  • Retinyl palmitate: mostly marketing. Do not expect tretinoin results.
  • Retinol: the classic OTC. Start low, two or three nights.
  • Retinal: stronger OTC, often better tolerated than people fear. Geek and Gorgeous A-Game is the Chemist-Warehouse-adjacent obsession.
  • Adapalene: pharmacist protocol in Australia. Acne first, ageing as a side quest.
  • Tretinoin: GP or dermatologist. Gold standard, not a starter kit.

How to use it without the ugly weeks becoming a lifestyle

Night only, unless a specific formula says otherwise. Skin bone dry. Pea size for the whole face. Not the lids unless your clinician said so. Moisturiser after, or the sandwich: moisturiser, retinoid, moisturiser. Two nights a week for two weeks. Then three. Then maybe more. If you sting, you do not graduate. You repeat the last week like a person with patience.

A pea on a fingertip against a whole face. Sandwich with moisturiser if the peel starts collecting.

Do not stack a BHA, AHA and retinoid in the same hour because a comment section said you could. Alternate. Vitamin C in the morning is the usual peace treaty. SPF is not optional on this page or any other. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: skip retinoids. That is the whole paragraph.

  • Purge is small, congested breakouts in your usual places, for a few weeks.
  • Damage is raw, shiny, burning skin that worsens after each use. That is a barrier injury. Stop.
  • Neck skin is thinner. If you use it there, go slower than the face.
  • More is not better. A pea is a pea. A grape is how people end up in Cicaplast exile.

What people get wrong on this ladder

They buy a retinyl palmitate moisturiser with SPF 15 and wait for tretinoin results. They start every night, add a peel, then declare retinoids toxic. They skip SPF because the cream was expensive. They import a tube with no AU label and no expiry they trust. The molecule is not the drama. The calendar is.

If your skin is already loud from acids, you do not need a stronger retinoid. You need a boring cleanser, a boring moisturiser, and the SPF page. Come back to vitamin A when the face looks like a face again. That is not quitting. That is how the ladder works.

AU products on this ladder

Alpha-H Liquid Gold and Vitamin A Serum sit in AU prestige for a reason. Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair is the pharmacy retinol people actually finish. Geek and Gorgeous A-Game 5, 10 and 20 is the retinal people recommend when they are tired of Medik8 prices. Differin is the pharmacist conversation. Tretinoin is the GP conversation. Do not buy a grey-market tube off a forum and then write us a poem.

Book if

  • You want a clinic to look at acne or pigment before you self-escalate to tretinoin.
  • Your barrier is cooked and you need a facial that is not another acid.
  • You are already on a retinoid and booking a peel. They need to know, or the peel will know first.

Skip if

  • You are pregnant, trying, or breastfeeding. This ladder is closed.
  • You wanted a one-week glow. Retinoids keep a calendar, not a weekend.
  • You planned to start tretinoin from a comment section. That is a prescription, not a vibe.

Ask this

  • Should I pause this retinoid before the peel, needling or LED you are booking?
  • What strength do you actually send first-timers home with in Australia?
  • Is this irritation a purge or a reason to stop?

Questions worth answering in full.

Is retinal stronger than retinol?
Yes, in the conversion chain. Retinal sits closer to retinoic acid, so many people get more change with similar or better tolerance than a high retinol. It is still not tretinoin.
Can I use retinol and vitamin C together?
Use vitamin C in the morning and the retinoid at night. That split avoids a chemistry argument on your face and keeps SPF in the same routine as the antioxidant.
How do I get tretinoin in Australia?
Talk to a GP or dermatologist. It is prescription-only. Online grey market tubes are a quality and legal problem, not a hack.
What is the sandwich method?
Moisturiser, then a pea of retinoid, then moisturiser again. It slows the hit. Useful when you are new, or when your barrier is dramatic.
Can I use retinol with azelaic acid?
Often yes, not in the same minute. Azelaic in the morning, retinoid at night is the calm version. Do not start both on day one. See the azelaic guide.
When should I stop before a clinic treatment?
Ask the clinic. Many pause retinoids several nights before peels, needling or laser. Do not guess from a generic blog if a named device is involved.
Can I use retinol with a LED mask?
Often on alternate nights, not on a wrecked barrier. If you are peeling, stop both and simplify. LED is not a laser, and it is not permission to double the retinoid.

This is not a treatment plan or medical advice. Retinoids are unsuitable in pregnancy. Prescriptions, dosing and pause windows belong to a qualified clinician.
