Gel is not SNS.
SNS is not builder.
Gel polish is a colour film. SNS is dip powder. Builder and BIAB are structure. Press-ons are a costume. Booking the wrong one is how a $25 lunch set meets an Instagram chrome brief and both lose.
Pick the system before the colour. Gel polish for thin colour, SNS for a fast hard set, builder or BIAB for shape, press-ons for a night. Always budget soak-off if another salon put it on.
Nail language collapsed into 'gel' the way skin language collapsed into 'facial'. They are different chemistries, different removal, different fill rules. Inner Melbourne menus already print SNS, Shellac, BIAB, Gel-X and acrylic on the same board. This page is the decoder so you stop asking for builder architecture in a twenty-minute dip slot. This is not a training manual for techs. It is how to book like an adult.
What each system actually is
Gel polish (often Shellac-class) is a thin, shiny colour cured in a lamp. It wants a fill or a soak-off, not a chisel tantrum. SNS and other dips are powder layers bonded with glue, hard and fast, popular for office durability. Builder gel and BIAB (builder in a bottle) add structure, length and a shaped apex. Gel-X and similar tips are a full-cover extension system. Acrylic is the older sculpt. Press-ons are glue or tabs and a deadline.
- Want colour that still looks like your nail: gel polish.
- Want armour without a sculpt: SNS or dip, if the prep is honest.
- Want length or a correction of bitten shape: builder, BIAB, Gel-X or acrylic.
- Want Saturday night: press-ons, then take them off before they take a nail with them.
Home kits versus the chair
Where the lamp should live
| Job | Home | Book a chair |
|---|---|---|
| A tidy colour for ten days | Press-ons or a careful gel-polish kit if you already own the lamp. | Gel polish at a floor that soaks, not rips. |
| Dip that lasts through a kitchen week | Home dip kits wreck cuticles in amateur hands. | SNS on a menu that quotes fill versus new set. |
| Architecture, chrome, Gel-X | No. | A named tech and a slot that is not a lunch dip. |
| Removal of someone else's product | Soaking yourself can shred the plate. | Pay for soak-off. Say what is on there. |
How to wear and remove without collecting ridges
Prep is the service. Oil at night, even if that sounds grandmotherly. Water and gloves if you clean for a living. Fills on time or the apex grows out and the free edge becomes a lever. Never peel gel. Peeling takes keratin with it. Soak, wrap, wait. If a floor says they do not soak other salons' dip, believe them and budget a removal appointment first.

Home lamps can under-cure cheap gel, which is how people get allergies. If your finger beds itch, you are done with DIY gel. That is a chemist and a pause, not a new brand of base coat.
What people get wrong about nail systems
They say gel when they mean SNS. They peel a soak-off product in the car. They want BIAB architecture in a lunch dip. They arrive with another salon's powder and are shocked that removal is extra. They buy a cheap lamp, under-cure, itch, and blame their body. Prep is the service. Removal is the service. Colour is the souvenir.
If the nail plate is already paper, the next set is not a personality. Bare, oil, wait. Then book the system you can actually name. Chrome on a thin, lifting film is how Instagram nails become a ridge map. The floor that will sit for structure is the floor that should get the photo you saved.
BIAB after SNS, soak-off versus drill, events
BIAB after SNS is a common fork. Honest removal first, then a look at the plate. If the nail is paper, wait. Soak-off is the default adult. E-file is a tool, not a personality. A rushed mill will thin the plate and call it prep. If you hear heat in the nail, speak. Weak nails after a year of dip are a grow-out project, not a new chrome.

Event timing: three to four days before, not twelve. Fresh sets snag. Tired sets chip in photos. A fill the morning of the wedding is how people collect a snag in the car. Say the date when you book so the slot is not a lunch dip you will regret.
AU products and the language on local menus
SNS is a brand that became a common noun on Melbourne boards. OPI, Shellac, Gel-X and BIAB show up by name when a floor is proud of the trolley. Press-on brands at Priceline are fine for a wedding guest, not a twelve-week commitment. Cuticle oil is the only 'aftercare product' that matters more than the colour.

Questions worth answering in full.
- Is SNS better than gel?
- Different. SNS is dip and usually feels harder. Gel polish is thinner and often looks more like a manicure. Builder gel is a third thing. Book the job, not the trend word.
- Can I put gel polish over SNS?
- A tech might. You should not invent the stack. Removal and prep change. Ask the chair that will also take it off.
- How long should gel polish last?
- Often ten to fourteen days if prep was honest and you do not use your nails as tools. Lifting at day three is a prep or chemistry problem, not your personal failure.
- Are at-home gel lamps safe?
- Under-cured gel is an allergy risk. Use the lamp the gel brand specifies, or go to a salon. If you itch, stop.
- Do press-ons ruin nails?
- Glue and ripping ruin nails. Tabs and a soak-off attitude do less damage. Limit the weeks you live in them.
- Can I get BIAB after SNS?
- Often yes, after honest removal and a look at the plate. If the nail is paper, wait. Ask the tech who will own the next system.
- When should I get nails done before an event?
- Forum habit is three to four days before, not twelve. Fresh sets snag. Tired sets chip. Confirm the room if you need art that has to dry into real life.
This is not a technician training guide. Allergies, infections and painful lifting need a professional, not another kit. Always say what is already on the nail.
