Guides / Hair
Keratin is a service.
Not a shampoo.
Salon keratin and smoothing systems reset how hair behaves for weeks. An at-home keratin shampoo is a conditioner with better PR. If you wanted INNOLuxe or Original Mineral, you wanted a chair, not a sachet.
Book salon keratin or a house smoothing system when frizz and blow-dry time are the brief. Use sulphate-aware aftercare at home. Skip box-kit formaldehyde theatre and do not stack keratin on a fresh bleach without a plan.
Keratin became a synonym for 'make it shiny'. In a salon it is a timed chemical service, often with a seal and a no-wash window. On a supermarket aisle it is a protein story in a bottle. Inner Melbourne rooms already print keratin next to blonding, weaves and INNOLuxe packages. This page keeps those jobs from collapsing. This is not a chemical protocol. Ask the stylist which system is on the trolley before you sit.
What salon keratin is doing
Smoothing and keratin-class services deposit and seal a coating that makes hair look straighter, shinier, faster to dry. They are not a permanent relaxer, and they are not a toner. Results grow out. Humidity still exists. If the hair is already compromised from bleach, the stylist may refuse, and that refusal is the service.

- Classic keratin / smoothing: frizz control and faster finishing for weeks to a few months.
- House systems (INNOLuxe, OM colour care, bond talk): ask what is actually being done. Colour is not keratin.
- At-home keratin shampoo: maintenance at best. It will not reprint a salon seal.
- Box-kit straightening: easy to overprocess. Easy to fill a bathroom with fumes you do not want.
Chair versus cupboard
Where the seal should happen
| Job | Home | Book a chair |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a salon keratin looking expensive | Sulphate-aware wash, cool-ish water, no tight wet bun. | The original room for a refresh, not a random express. |
| I want the actual smoothing service | No. | A timed keratin or house smooth, quoted before they start. |
| I also want bleach or a weave | Do not invent the order. | Ask how they sequence keratin against colour, braids or wefts. |
| My hair is elastic and snapping | Protein-heavy kits can make it worse. | A consult, not a sachet. |
Aftercare that is not a myth
The first wash window is real if they told you it is. Sweat, rain and a gym ponytail can crease a fresh seal. Sleep on a loose tie. Wash less often than your personality wants, with the aftercare they name. 'Sulphate-free' is a direction, not a personality. Some modern systems allow gentler sulphates. Use what that stylist sells, not a random purple bottle that says keratin in serif.
Heat is allowed later, not as a daily punishment. If you booked keratin so you could stop fighting a dryer, let that be the win. Stacking a cheap home keratin mask every night is how you get crunchy hair that still frizzes at the roots.
What people get wrong about keratin
They buy a keratin shampoo and wait for a salon seal. They wash on night one because the gym happened. They bleach and smooth in an order nobody owned. They treat INNOLuxe like a supermarket sachet. They call a toner keratin because both words sat near 'shiny' on a menu. Language collapse is how hair snaps.
If the stylist refuses the service, that is the service. Compromised hair does not become healthy because a box promised a Brazilian. Aftercare is the unglamorous half of the result. The bottle from that trolley beats a random serif label. Ask which system is actually on the trolley before you sit.
Nanoplasty versus keratin, curls, sting and the pool
Nanoplasty is the word AU threads reach for when they want smoother hair without a helmet of straight. Classic keratin is the older seal-and-shine brief. They are cousins, not twins. Ask which bottle is on the trolley, what it does to curl, and whether they call it formaldehyde-free because the formula changed or because the marketing did. Curls may loosen and not return exactly as they were. Say you live in curl before they start.

Sting is not proof it is working. Ventilation is not optional. If the room cannot talk about fumes, asthma, pregnancy or a reactive scalp, that is data. Chlorine and salt water are erasers on a fresh seal. Rinse before and after you swim, then use the aftercare they named, not a supermarket keratin shampoo as a pool plan.
AU names on real Melbourne menus
This directory already files keratin at Aveda colour houses, extension rooms and destination blonding doors. INNOLuxe at The DO is a colour-and-care package, not a supermarket keratin. Original Mineral rooms talk bond and colour, not a $12 sachet. Frika times keratin against weaves on purpose. Buy aftercare from the trolley that did the service when you can. The bottle that matches the chemistry is the one that belongs in the shower.

Book if
- Frizz and blow-dry time are the brief, and the hair can take a service.
- You need keratin timed against colour, blonding, wefts or braids.
- A box kit already went wrong and you want a grown-up assessment.
Skip if
- You wanted a toner and said keratin because the words felt adjacent.
- The hair is already breaking. Smoothing will not invent integrity.
- You cannot keep the first-wash window. Book when your week can.
Ask this
- Which system is this: keratin, Brazilian-class smooth, or a colour-care add-on?
- How do you time this against bleach, toner or extensions?
- What do I wash with, and when is the first wash actually allowed?

Questions worth answering in full.
- How long does salon keratin last?
- Often several weeks to a few months, depending on the system, how often you wash, and how the hair was to begin with. It grows out. It does not switch off on day fifteen unless aftercare failed early.
- Can I colour and keratin on the same day?
- Sometimes, in a sequence the stylist owns. Do not assume. Bleach plus a smooth in amateur order is how people collect snap.
- Are at-home keratin kits worth it?
- As a mild frizz mask, maybe. As a replacement for a salon seal, no. Fume-heavy kits in a bathroom are a hard skip.
- Do I have to go sulphate-free forever?
- Follow the system you bought. Many still prefer a gentler wash. 'Forever' is less important than the first month.
- Will keratin make curly hair straight?
- It can loosen and polish. It should not be sold as a permanent relaxer. If you live in curl, say so, or you will be sad in week six.
- Is formaldehyde sting normal in a keratin service?
- No. Ask about ventilation and the system. If you have asthma, a reactive scalp, or you are pregnant, this is a clinician-and-stylist conversation, not a group chat.
- Can I swim after salon keratin?
- Chlorine and salt are rough on a fresh seal. Follow the first-wash window, then rinse and use the aftercare they named. A keratin shampoo is not a pool plan.
This is not a chemical protocol or medical advice. Compromised hair, scalp conditions and pregnancy should be cleared with the stylist or a clinician before a smoothing service.
